Question: When I double-click on the Internet Explorer Icon or Netscape, I am no longer prompted to connect to InfoNet.

Answer: From Microsoft support:

Internet Explorer May Not Dial Automatically

Last reviewed: September 11, 1997
Article ID: Q139105
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 2.0, 3.0, 3.01, 3.02 for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you have the AutoDial (Internet Explorer 2.0) or "Connect to the Internet as needed" (Internet Explorer 3.x) feature enabled and you start Microsoft Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer may not automatically dial your Internet service provider. Because you are not connected to your service provider, the following error message may be displayed:

Unable to find <Web site>. The address may be incorrect.

where <Web site> is the Internet address of your Start page.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you switch from using a proxy server (a server on a local area network that lets you connect to the Internet without using a modem) or other local area network (LAN)-based connection, to having Internet Explorer automatically dial your Internet service provider (ISP). After you configure Internet Explorer to use the AutoDial or "Connect to the Internet as needed" feature, your current Start page may still be the Start page that you were using with a proxy server or other LAN-based connection. If Internet Explorer does not need to connect to your Internet service provider to access your Start page, it does not automatically dial. Your Internet service provider is automatically dialed only when you attempt to access a Web site that Internet Explorer cannot access without first dialing your provider.

The error message may be displayed when your Start page is one that is normally accessed using a proxy server or other LAN-based connection, but is currently not available.

NOTE: It is possible for the behavior described in this article to occur even if you have never configured Internet Explorer to connect to the Internet using a proxy server or other LAN-based connection. This behavior can also occur when your current Start page is a Web site that Internet Explorer cannot access without first dialing your Internet service provider. The resolution described in this article resolves this behavior in these cases.

RESOLUTION

To cause Internet Explorer to automatically dial your Internet service provider, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking.

  2. Double-click the connection you use to dial the Internet, and then log on as you normally do. If you do not know which connection to use, then use the right mouse button to click The Internet icon on the desktop, click Properties, and then see which connection is listed in the Dial-Up Networking box (this information is on the Connection tab in Internet Explorer 3.x)

  3. After you start the Dial-Up Networking connection, start Internet Explorer.

  4. Empty the temporary file cache. To do so, click Options on the View menu, click the Advanced tab, click Settings, click Empty Folder, click Yes, click OK, and then click OK again.

  5. Type the Internet address of the Web site you want to use as your Start page in the Address box, and then press the ENTER key. Perform this step even if the site you want to use is already listed in the Address box.

  6. If the address you want to use did not appear in the Address box when you started Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu, click the Start And Search Pages tab, and then click Use Current (this information is on the Navigation tab in Internet Explorer 3.x).

  7. Quit Internet Explorer and the Dial-Up Networking connection, and then restart Internet Explorer.

Question:When I try to connect I am prompted to re-enter my password until the Dial-Up Connection Fails

Answer: There are a few possible solutions/causes to this problem. The most common problem is your CAPS Lock is pressed which causes anything you type to be in Uppercase. Since InfoNet's server is Case-Sensitive and all user information is entered in lowercase letters you must enter your use rid and password both in lowercase letters (No matter how you wrote them on the sign up form). Just press your CAPS lock once again to disable it, and retype your password. Another thing to check is that you are not using your e-mail address for your user-id. This is a very common misconception. Your user-id/user name is the first part of your e-mail address (Example: tech@sparc.isl.net -> Use rid = tech). If you have this entered incorrectly change it and retry the connection. If the problem persists contact InfoNet (507-286-8737) to make sure your account is still active.
Question: Why do I have 2 E-Mail addresses? @infonet.isl.net & @sparc.isl.net, Which one do I give out to my Friends?

Answer: This is one of the more confusing issues with the InfoNet Service. It does not matter what address you give to your friends it should work either way. Some users have had difficulties receiving mail from other servers when they give out their user-id@infonet.isl.net. I would suggest using your user-id@sparc.isl.net, it seems to work best.
Question: I can send e-mail but can't receive any.

Answer: The best thing to do is check your e-mail settings. It is possible that something was entered incorrectly. Open the Internet Mail program by click the START Button, Programs, Then click the Internet Mail Icon (Towards the bottom of the listing). Once Internet Mail is loaded it may ask you to connect to InfoNet, click close or cancel. If you receive any Errors click OK or close. Once you are safely in the Mail program click the Mail Pull down. Click Options then click the Server Tab (Third Tab). If your e-mail address is your user-id@infonet.isl.net change it to your user-id@sparc.isl.net. The POP and SMTP server's should say sparc.isl.net. Change them both to 199.3.25.3. Make sure your user name and password are correct and lowercase. Click the OK button, if you have to exit the mail program to save the settings then do so. Run the Internet mail program once again and send a message to yourself. Then check to see if you received the message.
Question: When in Internet Explorer, I click the Mail button on the toolbar and click Read Mail. It no longer loads my Internet Mail program

Answer: In the Internet Explorer Click the view Pull Down and then click Options. Click the Programs Tab. Click the Mail Combo Box, and Select Internet Mail. This usually will change if you have installed Office 97 with Microsoft Outlook, or Exchange, or some other e-mail service.
Question: How do I receive additional E-Mail Accounts?

Answer: Currently Additional E-Mail accounts cost $5.00 per account per Month. To receive an additional e-mail account you must visit our online manuals site, and then make arrangements with our accounting department for payment. To create a new e-mail account click here.
Question: How do I change my password?

Answer: To change your password, you must Telnet to '199.3.25.3' (without quotes) and login using your current username and password. At the '$' prompt, type in 'passwd' (without quotes) You be asked to enter your current password, then your new password, and then to confirm your new password. Please write down your new password and save it in a safe location. Infonet will not know your new password once you have changed it.

Windows 95/98 users may telnet by accessing it from the Start - Run command, type 'telnet 199.3.25.3' (without quotes) into the command box and press enter
Macintosh users may use a client such as NiftyTelnet to open a connection to '199.3.25.3' (Host) and then follow the directions above.
